Position Summary
The Senior Laboratory Technician position assumes the responsibility of managing teaching/research laboratory activities and resources to support the mission of the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The Senior Laboratory Technician assumes greater responsibility and involvement regarding laboratory issues, such as safety and research support, than the Laboratory Technician. The Senior Laboratory Technician reports to the Laboratory Manager and participates in departmental meetings as requested.

  • Oversee the general set-up, maintenance, and security of all classroom laboratories and related equipment.
  • Keep classroom laboratories and the stockroom areas clean and organized.
  • Meet with faculty members as needed for instructions on weekly lab set-up and clean-up operations for the teaching laboratories.
  • Support and participate in the development of faculty research projects as needed.
  • Assist with the ordering of supplies and materials.
  • Arrange for repair or replacement of broken equipment.
  • Provide lab safety instruction to students, adjunct faculty, and full-time faculty members as directed by the laboratory manager.
  • Willing to serve on the Institutional Biosafety Committee to help determine and resolve ethical and safety concerns of faculty research.
  • Assist in the categorization and disposal of hazardous chemicals and biohazards for the Department of Natural Sciences and other campus members as needed.
  • Assist in the maintenance of laboratory OSHA and fire/earthquake safety regulations in teaching labs, prep rooms, and storage areas of Science Center.

Required Qualifications
  • Masters degree or higher with at least 3-5 years of experience in an area of the Natural Sciences
  • Competence in laboratory skills in the disciplines of including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Science
  • Strong employee customer service orientation
  • Strong computer skills with MS Office Suite
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and abilities
  • Strong project management skills and attention to detail
  • Must be professional, diplomatic, and able to serve diverse constituents with equity, fairness and tact

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong background in the areas of Microbiology, Molecular Biology, and/or Biochemistry
