Job Description
The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is looking for vibrant, dynamic individuals interested in working in a team environment dedicated to student success. The mission of Arts and Sciences Advising Services is to guide our diverse undergraduate population in developing and implementing sound educational plans that are consistent with their values and their academic and career goals. This is an exempt, 12-month, full-time, non-tenure track staff position that provides an exciting opportunity to be a part of an office that integrates academic and career advising with self-exploration, leadership, and experience learning.

Responsibilities
The Academic Advisor serves as a member of the Advising Services staff and exists to provide comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate students and to promote advising as an essential tool for academic success and a critical component of the educational experience. The primary responsibility of this position is to advise students in the College of Arts and Sciences.
The Academic Advisor I/Senior Advisor will support students as they transition at various points throughout their academic careers at UT which include:
- Self- exploration that focuses on strengths, interests, and values
- Major and career exploration
- Identification of co-curricular, career and experience learning, and leadership opportunities to support both academic and professional development, and
- Selection of major and development of an academic plan that aligns with strengths, aspirations, and abilities
The Academic Advisor I/Senior Advisor will:
- Foster students' intellectual and personal development toward academic success
- Interpret and advise students on policies and procedures of the University and College of Arts and Sciences
- Teach students the purpose of General Education and Vol Core requirements, the academic opportunities across colleges, and the Arts and Sciences curriculum
- Conduct pre-health, pre-law, academic probation, and pre-teaching academic advising appointments
- Represent the College of Arts and Sciences at university-wide events
- Provide all services related to new student and transfer orientation advising sessions
- Evaluate students' progress, assist in development students' desired goals, and develop strategic academic plans to accomplish goals
- Inform students of academic options and advise on best courses of action
- Provide all services related to new student and transfer orientation advising sessions
- Evaluate students' needs and make appropriate referrals to campus and college resources
- Prepare for advising appointments and maintain confidential detailed student records, ensure accurate records are maintained, correspond with advisees on a regular basis through email
In addition to what is listed above, Senior Advisor will:
- Serve as a mentor to a new A&S advisor, present content during orientation advising training, develop and present professional development programs during A&S advising staff meetings and staff workshops
- Foster professional and personal development.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Master's degree (must have Master's Degree within 30 days the start date)
- Demonstrated knowledge of academic advising and student learning/development theories applied to practice
- Experience working with students in a college or university setting
- Experience working with a diverse student population
- Excellent oral communication and writing skills
Desired Experience:
- Master's degree in higher education, college student development, or related liberal arts field
- Experience working in a team-oriented environment
- Experience advising special populations
- Experience conducting freshmen and/or transfer orientations
- Administrative and organizational skills with the ability to handle simultaneous projects
- Ability to utilize technology that supports both students and professional practice (MS Word, Excel, Student Information Systems, Degree Audits, Internet/On-line Resources and Support)
Salary: $49,000 includes a standard university benefits package
Senior Advisor (in addition to the above requirements)
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in higher education, college student development, or related liberal arts field
- Minimum of two years' experience in advising or career/academic coaching at the college or university
- Excellent oral communication and writing skills.
- Administrative and organizational skills with the ability to handle simultaneous projects.
- The ability to relate effectively to students, faculty, support staff, alumni, and parents.
- Ability to present complex information to groups of students and staff
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with a diverse student population
- Experience in mentoring staff
- Knowledge of arts and sciences curriculum
- Knowledge of UT policies, procedures, resources and support for students
SALARY: $52,000 includes a standard university benefits package
