Position Summary:
The College of Health and Applied Sciences at MSU Denver is seeking applicants to fill four Academic Advisor & Retention Specialist (AARS) positions. Each Academic Advisor & Retention Specialist will report to the College of Health and Applied Sciences (CHAS) Advising Office and participate in relevant academic advising activities with the University's Academic Advising Center. Using developmental advising techniques, these positions will be responsible for helping incoming and continuing students who have declared majors in CHAS. Serving both on-campus and online students, the AARS will help students determine an appropriate academic path, including selecting an appropriate major/minor, choosing classes, and beginning to define a career path.

In collaboration with advising coordinators and other faculty members in the academic departments served, the AARS will make targeted outreach to students to identify potential obstacles to retention and graduation. The AARS will also help plan and deliver university-wide and college-wide advising programs and initiatives, such as new student orientation advising, support for General Studies, support for CHAS curricular initiatives, and support for the university's Hispanic Serving Institution initiative.

Duties/Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the Academic Advisor & Retention Specialists are to provide informed guidance and accurate information in the most efficient, accessible, and comprehensive manner possible to assist students in reaching their educational, life, and career goals.

Academic Advising (50%)
Conduct individual advising sessions for students who have declared majors in the College of Health and Applied Sciences (CHAS).
Assist with course selection, scheduling, and registration.
Help with long-term degree planning.
Assist with and evaluate transfer courses and submit degree exceptions where applicable.
Refer students to appropriate university resources.
Provide basic information related to career planning, financial aid, admissions and other applicable information related to student needs.
Review CHAS sections of the University Catalog to ensure all curriculum changes have been accurately reflected to ensure accurate advising.

Retention (30%)

Manage caseloads of CHAS students.
Conduct outreach to CHAS students by making phone calls and sending emails to continuing students.
Identify students who are not reaching program and career-selection milestones as defined by department chairs or faculty advising coordinators.
Design and implement appropriate interventions.
Assist with the collection of data for the preparation of reporting related to the assessment of advising services.

Recruitment and Support (10%)
Participate in University recruitment events, including outreach and involvement with underrepresented groups.
Participate in Student Orientation Advising and Registration (SOAR) and CHAS Transfer Student Orientations.
Work with the Admissions office to identify newly admitted CHAS majors and contact them regarding orientation and advising.
Support the Universitys Hispanic Serving Institution initiative.

Training and Professional Development (5%)
Remain up to date on advising systems and trends in developmental advising.
Provide advising assistance and training for CHAS faculty.
Participate in advisor training sessions.
Attend professional development opportunities whenever possible.

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)


Required Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in Higher Education, College Personnel or related field, or an academic discipline taught in College of Health and Applied Sciences
  • At least two years of academic advising experience at an accredited post-secondary institution or two years mentoring or advising students
  • Experience with academic advising software (Banner, DegreeWorks, GradesFirst, Starfish, Student Success Collaborative, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in program assessment and/or annual reporting
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • Experience in recruitment of students or enrollment of students
  • A strong background and awareness of BIPOC, LBGTQIA, low-income, first-generation, undocumented, non-traditional, veteran, English-language learner students, as well as students with disabilities
