PostDoc - Department of Biological Sciences

Position Summary:
The Romero-Severson Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Notre Dame is currently seeking a postdoctoral scholar to assist with a project funded by the USDA ARS to determine the ancestry of complex interspecific hybrids in the species Castanea (chestnut), elucidate of the pedigrees in an elite germplasm pool and investigate the relationship between pedigree and performance in the half-sib family descendants of this elite pool.

The primary duties of this postdoc will involve empirical data collection, conducting data analysis and publicizing the results. The selected candidate will organize and conduct laboratory experiments, perform analysis of resulting genomic datasets and prepare manuscripts for publication. The initial duration of this postdoc will be one year, extendable up to 30 months (2.5 years) with satisfactory performance towards project objectives. Compensation is $52,000 per annum with benefits.

The preferred candidate will have proficiency with primer design, various forms of PCR, DNA/RNA-purification, gel electrophoresis and sequencing, and the analysis of high throughput sequencing data. Familiarity with the computational tools used in the ascertainment of ancestry, family pedigrees and functional genomics is desirable. Other requirements are excellent record keeping and organizational skills, preparation of scientific manuscripts and oral presentations, and the ability to work in a collaborative setting. Command of spoken and written technical English is a requirement. The applicant must be physically present to perform the work and available for travel by car within the United States.

The Romero-Severson program employs phenomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics and proteomics to elucidate the genetic basis of complex traits in hardwood trees. The PI is dedicated to working with the postdoctoral scholar in establishing themselves as an independent researcher. This includes writing grant proposals as a co-PI and leading a small research team. In addition, the selected candidate will be expected to contribute to an inclusive lab culture, and will be encouraged to participate in diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Our collaborators include investigators at University of Missouri at Columbia, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, the USDA-ARS at Texas A&M, University of Laval in Quebec City and the United States Forest Service.
